Following yesterday’s UK title change (from The Avengers to Marvel Avengers Assemble), Marvel today released the official second trailer for Joss Whedon’s ensemble superhero blockbuster, due for release on this side of the pond on 26 April. The eagerly-anticipated Marvel mash-up stars Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) as they face off against Tom Hiddleston’s evil Loki.
Clocking in at 2:24, the latest trailer for the film shows Samuel L. Jackson’s super-spy Nick Fury recruiting the world’s finest fighters under the ‘Avengers Initiative’ in order to defeat a new threat orchestrated by Loki (familiar to those that saw last year’s first entry in the Thor franchise). As with the previous trailers, high-octane action sequences and swift one-liners are seemingly on the menu throughout, mostly courtesy of Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark – undeniably one of Marvel’s strongest characters.
Jeremy Renner still seems out of place as Hawkeye (whether his character will get a hefty chunk of backstory remains to be seen) and there is still little indication as to what exact form the threat from Loki comes in (from what we’ve been able view so far, flying robots and a giant, metal snake-like creature – potentially Fin Fang Foom), but Whedon’s film certainly has the big names and glossy polish to make a big impact on its release in April. One thing’s for sure – it will need all the luck it can get if it is to compete with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises in terms of box office takings.
Marvel Avengers Assemble is due to be released in UK cinemas on 26 April, 2012. For more info, visit facebook.com/AvengersUK.
