Preview: ‘The Avengers’ Super Bowl trailer

The Super Bowl commercial breaks are established prime trailer territory, and yesterday we were treated to a new teaser for Marvel’s summer superhero ensemble blockbuster The Avengers (2012), starring Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and a whole host of other Hollywood players.

It’s going to be a big year for comic book movies with Christopher Nolan’s third and final Batman film The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Spidey reboot The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) also battling it out at the box office. Although it will take a superhuman effort to better the Caped Crusader, if you combine the fan base of the Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Incredible Hulk movie franchises, there is some serious ticket-buying potential.

First published in 1963 and created by comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, there have been numerous incarnations of The Avengers over the years. From what we’ve seen so far, it seems the new movie will be heavily influenced by The Ultimates, a 2002 reimagining of the superhero team written by Kick-Ass scribe Mark Millar. So that’s the background – but what do we know about the plot?

When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. We have already seen amusing banter between Tony Stark and Captain America, as well as fleeting appearances from Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. Although the Super Bowl teaser doesn’t give too much away, we do get a glimpse at what Serenity (2005) director Joss Whedon spent the special effects budget on, and so far his efforts look impressive.

With reports that an Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and even an untitled Nick Fury movie are already in the pipeline, this is sure to be the first of many outings for ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’.

The Avengers is due to be released in UK cinemas on 26 April, 2012. For more info, visit facebook.com/AvengersUK.
