Preview: ‘Total Recall’ trailer arrives online

Following the 33-second teaser trailer which appeared online last week (it looks like the Prometheus model is here to stay, for better or for worse), Sony Pictures today unleashed the first full trailer for Len Wiseman’s 2012 Total Recall remake over at Apple Movie Trailers, starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale and Bryan Cranston. Taking up Schwarzenegger’s role from the 1990 original, Farrell plays Douglas Quaid, a factory worker who enters the ‘Total Recall’ programme in order to live out a fantasy existence as a secret agent – only to discover that he may have been one all along.

Setting what appears to be the majority of the film’s action firmly on Earth (a departure from both Philip K. Dick’s source novel and Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 film), with the backdrop to the film apparently a struggle for supremacy between the futuristic rival nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, early footage and rumours regarding Wiseman’s remake have already divided opinion. Many fans of the original seem disgruntled by the remake’s numerous narrative departures, with the omission of a certain Mars-based mining colony (and, God forbid, potentially the three-breasted mutant prostitute) seemingly sticking in the throats of many die-hard Arnie/Verhoeven lovers.

However, there also seems to be a growing number of sci-fi enthusiasts excited at the prospect of Wiseman’s fresh approach, most of whom appear to be of the opinion that there is plenty of scope for improvement on Verhoeven’s cult effort. From this new trailer, a lot of the focus seems to have gone on transforming the action set-pieces into Bourne-inflected shoot-outs, with Farrell’s Quaid dispatching numerous foes before delivering the final iconic line, “If I’m not me, then who the Hell am I?”.

A Source Code-aping official poster and action-heavy first trailer may do little to quell the dissidents, but Farrell is a proven leading man, whilst Beckinsale and Biel look set to face off in what has to be one of 2012’s most anticipated catfights. Len Wiseman’s Total Recall is released in UK cinemas on 22 August, 2012.
