The first trailer is still doing the rounds for US director Wes Anderson’s return to live-action filmmaking, Moonrise Kingdom (2012). Reuniting Anderson with regular collaborators Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman – on top of a fine cast including Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand and Harvey Keitel – the trailer reveals the director’s trademark quirky subject matter and attention to detail, this time focusing on the adventures of a young Khaki Scout. What’s more, Anderson’s film will also open this year’s 65th Cannes Film Festival. 
Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. Willis plays the local sheriff; Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader; Murray and McDormand portray the young girl’s parents and Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward star as the boy and girl.
With a UK release date set for 25 May, Anderson fans don’t have long to wait for the director’s first live action film since 2007’s muddled The Darjeeling Limited. In addition, with son of Francis Ford, Roman Coppola down as a co-writer and Oscar-winner Alexandre Desplat on board as composer, the pedigree is certainly high for Moonrise Kingdom – let’s just hope that Anderson remembers his knot tying classes when it comes to avoiding those pesky plot holes.
Moonrise Kingdom is due to be released in UK cinemas on 25 May, 2012.
