Competition: Win ‘L’Atalante’ and the films of Jean Vigo on DVD *closed*

Thanks to the wonderful home entertainment team at Artificial Eye, we have THREE DVD copies of the L’Atalante and the films of Jean Vigo box set to give away to our loyal fans following the cinematic rerelease of Vigo’s masterpiece earlier this year. This is an exclusive competition for our Facebook and Twitter fans, so if you haven’t already, ‘Like’ us at or follow us @CineVue.

A timeless masterpiece of love and yearning, Vigo’s L’Atalante (1934) was the only full length film made by the French director before his tragic early death, yet is considered to be one of cinema’s very greatest works. Dita Parlo stars as a young bride who begins married life aboard her husband’s barge on the Seine. But within the boat’s cramped confines, shared with a small crew (including the eccentric Père Jules, memorably played by Michel Simon) and an abundance of cats, the relationship begins to flounder.

Vigo imbues this simple tale, beautifully shot by Boris Kaufman, with social realism, lyrical romance and sensual eroticism to create a unique and enduring classic. This 2 discs set also features the rest of Vigo’s remarkable works – his inventive first films À Propos de Nice (1930) and Taris (1931), as well as the anarchic tale of student rebellion Zero de Conduite (1933).

To be in with a chance of winning one of THREE DVD copies of L’Atalante and the films of Jean Vigo, just answer the following simple question.

Acclaimed French director Jean Vigo died in which year?

a) 1934
b) 1941
c) 1945
