From acclaimed writer and director John Michael McDonagh (The Guard), darkly comic Irish drama Calvary (2014) stars Brendan Gleeson as a threatened priest in a small rural community, alongside an ensemble cast that includes his son Domhnall Gleeson, Dylan Moran, Chris O’Dowd and Kelly Reilly. To celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of Calvary this coming Monday (11 August), we have THREE DVD copies of McDonagh’s well-received sophomore feature to give away to our loyal readers, courtesy of the publicity team at distributors Entertainment One. During confession one Sunday, an unseen local informs Father James (Gleeson) of his plan of killing him as a way of gaining retribution for abuse he suffered as a young boy at the hands of another Catholic priest. Left with only seven days to make his peace, James visits those within his community while trying to track down his potential killer. Through his exchanges with the locals, which include a cuckolded butcher (O’Dowd), a wealthy businessman (Moran) and an atheistic doctor (Games of Thrones star Aidan Gillen), James realises that the institution to which he has dedicated his life is becoming obsolete, causing him to doubt the validity of his faith.
Calvary director John Michael McDonagh’s brother Martin is also a filmmaker. What was the title of his award-winning debut feature?
a) In Banstead
b) In Belfast
c) In Bruges
