Oscars 2011: 83rd Academy Awards nominations

At 13:30 GMT today, the American Academy released the Oscar nominations for this year’s 83rd Academy Awards ceremony, to be held on 27 February. British films anticipating some recognition prior to the announcement included Tom Hooper’s hotly tipped drama The King’s Speech and Danny Boyle’s superbly tense, adrenaline soaked thriller 127 Hours.

In addition, British actor Colin Firth was widely expected to receive his second ‘Best Actor’ nomination in two years for his performance as the stuttering monarch King George VI in The King’s Speech, after being bested by US slacker icon Jeff Bridges in last year’s contest.

Surprises were ultimately few and far between (excluding perhaps Winter’s Bone’s ‘Best Picture’ nomination), but the final nominee line-up is still one of the strongest in years.
