Ocean’s 8: a crime of the times

There have been some great casino-based films over the years and they’re not just enjoyed by gamblers either. What’s very notable about these sorts of films is that they’re always gripping, especially with them usually leading the viewer on a rollercoaster ride of great highs, as well as dramatic lows.

So which new casino films should you be looking to watch right now? To be released in June and written by Olivia Milch and Gary Ross, with the latter also directing it, Ocean’s 8 is a sort-of-sequel to the Ocean’s film series; and a soft reboot too with an all-female cast this time around. There are some great actresses set to appear in the film with the likes of Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Rihanna all starring in the Ocean’s spin-off.

The premise very much follows what has gone before it, in regard to Ocean’s Eleven and lead character Danny Ocean. This time around it’s Danny’s estranged sister Debbie, played by world-renowned actress Sandra Bullock, who takes the lead role. She, like her brother, is looking to pull off the heist of the century; but to do it she needs to put together the perfect crew who can help things run as smoothly as possible.

Debbie’s close friend Lou, played by Cate Blanchett, is the first member recruited followed by Rose (Helena Bonham Carter), Nine Ball (Rihanna), Tammy (Sarah Paulson), Amita (Mindy Kaling), and Constance (Awkwafina). Every year New York City plays host to the Met Gala which is always a star-studded and glitzy event and this is to be the team’s target in the heist. Every year millions of dollars are donated in order to support the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, so it’s clear to see why this is the place that Debbie has chosen for her big job.

Filming for Ocean’s 8 began in New York City back in late October 2016 with Cate Blanchett, who stars as Lou in the film, saying that production had been wrapped up in March last year. However, it was also claimed that in May 2017 that filming had resumed, but this time on Staten Island at the Arthur Kill Correctional facility; due to previous hold ups which couldn’t be completed before.

Ocean’s Eleven is one of the most well-known and critically acclaimed Hollywood films of the last few decades. It starred an all-star cast which included the likes of George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. It comes as no surprise that Ocean’s 8 is following the same blue print in terms of not only hiring top actresses such as Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, but that the storyline very much goes along with the same theme.

The soft reboot will also see Matt Damon and Carl Reiner reprise their roles from the Ocean’s trilogy; and there’s also set to be cameo appearances from the likes of Kim Kardashian, Maria Sharapova, Zayn Malik, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner and tennis star Serena Williams. It won’t be one of the best casino films of all time, however, the cast itself will certainly be big enough to draw in viewers and if Ocean’s Eleven is anything to go by, Ocean’s 8 should go on to be a roaring success, especially with Warner Bros. behind the production.
