There are not too many gambling movies that have a female lead. Molly’s Game follows the talented gambler, Molly Bloom. She starts as an Olympic skier turns assistant at a poker game, and quickly ends up running her own underground poker game. While she tries to avoid the FBI, she juggles the many participants from Russian mobs as well as the wealthy and the famous. The movie centres ultimately around the poker table. The main character Molly is played by Jessica Chastain and her lawyer is played by Idris Elba.
Win It All (2017)
Jake Johnson plays Eddie Garret in this comedy gambling movie from 2017. Win It All follows Eddie who’s trying to recover from a gambling addiction. But then Eddie gets a task to do. He has to store a bag full of $10,000 for a shady kind of type. Eddie can’t seem to control himself and is very quickly on the road to disaster. He starts to gamble with the money and soon everything is going quite unfortunate for poor Eddie. This movie is a more light and comedic take on a gambling movie. It’s definitely worth a watch if you’re looking for a laugh.
The Card Counter (2021)
The newest of the three is The Card Counter by Paul Schrader and Martin Scorsese. The movie depicts the talented card counter William Tell played by Oscar Isaac. He learned to count cards while he was serving time in a military prison. The main character William has struggled with his inner demons and has used card counting to become more controlled and patient. This is what he’s also trying to teach one of the other characters in the movie, Cirk Beaufort. The movie works with the pros and cons of gambling and psychological tensions to make a new casino classic.
