Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has starred in some pretty spectacular movies over the years. Although he primarily started as a professional wrestler and didn’t get into acting until his early thirties, The Rock is one of the highest-grossing actors of all time and currently one of the most influential people in Hollywood. Here are the top five Dwayne Johnson movies that kept us at the edge of our seats during the entire ride.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
From the dozens of movies Johnson starred in, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stands out as certainly one of the most unique and surprising hits of his acting career. This remake of the popular 1981 book and 1995 movie of the same name found the perfect measure between following the main story and distancing itself from the previous versions.
Starring alongside a star-studded cast of Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillian, Johnson plays a nerdy teenager who, when sucked into the game, becomes a bulky giant in whose way no one can get. The film garnered major international success, so much so, that there will be a sequel coming around Christmas of 2019. Plus, there are all kinds of tie-in Jumanji products, such as Jumanji game boards, escape room sets, outfits and even an online game which you can try out at some of the best mobile casino sites around.
Walking Tall
During the period when The Rock was still trying to find his place on the big screen, Walking Tall came as an excellent opportunity. While this movie isn’t one of his best-known or most successful projects, it’s one of the best ones he has ever worked on.
The remake of the 1973 classic starring Joe Don Baker centres around a small-town sheriff, played by Johnson, who is set out to crush the local casino mobster and bring order to his community. It’s one of the very first movies Johnson has starred in and the first movie where viewers could see his natural charm and recognisable appearance he is known for today.
Moana
A couple of years ago, we reviewed one of the most critically acclaimed movies Johnson has ever starred in, Moana. While the movie itself was considered a perfect family flick, full of humour, heart-pumping adventure and catchy music, it was Johnson who emerged as the absolute star of this Disney animated movie. Many movie critics played Johnson’s performance, claiming his role to be the best part of Moana and him the perfect choice for the demi-god Maui. Moana also helped to establish Johnson’s role as a very versatile actor and one that’s much more than an action movie star.
Fighting with My Family
While Johnson has appeared in all sorts of movies, portraying every type of character you could imagine, but surprisingly hasn’t ever stared in a movie as himself. This changed in 2019 and Fighting with My Family, a biographical sports comedy-drama depicting the career of professional wrestler Saraya Knight. The movie has been in the making for several years and has been postponed multiple times after finally coming out in 2019. This great rags-to-riches story could also be considered as Johnson’s most demanding project to date, as he not only starred in the movie but served as a produced and had a big role in shaping the overall tone of the movie.
Fast & Furious
The Fast & Furious franchise was well-known even before Johnson first appeared in it, with four successful movies from 2001 to 2011. But, it was Johnson himself, who helped propel the series into one of the top-grossing movie franchises of all time. First appearing in the Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson was the missing ingredient that made Fast & Furious into what we know today.
The seventh and eighth instalment of the franchise both grossed over $1.2 billion in the box office and cemented his place as a true Hollywood superstar. With the ninth instalment of the franchise in the works, Fast & Furious can only go up the ranks of the top-grossing movie series of all time.
